The 'Icon' wines are our biggest and most 'serious'' wines here at d'Arenberg. The Dead Arm Shiraz, The Coppermine Road and The Ironstone Pressings are our 'Big Three', which represent the pinnacle of d'Arenberg's efforts in McLaren Vale, both in the vineyard and the winery. The notion of separately vinifying and bottling the very best Shiraz, Cabernet and Grenache/ Shiraz/ Mourvedre blend each vintage stems from the early 1990's. The 'Icons' are the product of a complex array of ingredients; very old and low yielding vines (sometimes only 1/4 of a tonne per acre), age-old winemaking techniques and rigorous barrel selection, where only the very best barrels are used, and a complete and thorough understanding of the vines. The wines made from these McLaren Vale grapes are powerful, complex, concentrated and yet perfectly balanced. The 'Icons' show restraint when young (even though the wines are massive) and have a great capacity for longevity -- these wines will last a lifetime. Grenache/garancha is probably the mostly planted grape on earth. The grape is light in colour and tannin but high in alcohol and has profound natural sweetness. Most grenache were gone into fortified dessert wines as well as rose or a major component in blending. The Abrazo is typically lighter red in colour and saw little wood maturation. Profound nose of cotton candy, dark cherry liqueur or kirsch mixed with black plum brandy with a whaff of rose water, sweet seaweed and southern French mixed herb. This medium body wine is round and soft in tannin. A juicy offer but leaves a long finish that laced with dark chocolate and subtle white pepper. A top grade quaffer indeed. This wine naturally accompanies with a light tomato sauced based dish and pizza. 88-90 points. Tasted 27 November 2006 by Michael Lam of the Beverage Review.

Welcome back to ThatFOODandWINEshow. This episode focuses on Banyuls -- a concentrated-style sweet red dessert wine from the South of France. Banyuls are produced from late-picked grapes which come from the same vineyards as Collioure. Both Banyuls and Collioure wines are primarily made from Grenache and Mourvedre with smaller percentages of Cinsault, Syrah and Carignan. Banyuls are considered "Vin Doux Naturel" (fortified sweet wines). Banyuls typically have sweet dried red fruit and chocolate flavors and pair exceptionally well with chocolate and red berry desssers. However, like port, Banyuls can be enjoyed as dessert by itself.The featured wine on today's show was Domaine de Paulillies Banyuls Rimage. "Rimage" translates to vintage -- this particular wine's vintage is 2006. I scored this wine 92 points and as such, highly recommend trying it.
This week we suggest a wine of a variety we haven't covered in the entire time that WineWeek has been pouring rapid tips for you all. The unloved grape is grenache, and we explain why we've avoided it until now. We also look at an aged semillon that is affordable and comes from somewhere you might not expect. Our final wine this week is a pinot noir which is receiving a lot of attention at the moment for getting high 90 scores from the big name judges, but can be had for around $20.
This week we check out three wines from producers that don't have a big name in the market, but seem destined for bigger things. The first is a red blend from the Bendigo region which is available for just loose change. The second is a McLaren Vale shiraz-grenache that;s ideal for drinking right now. The final wine for this week is a great chardonnay from a region growing great versions of the wine.
Down under right now most of the country is feeling the effects of a cold winter. How do you warm up when it's under 10 degrees? A bottle of Tokay from Rutherglen might just be the perfect answer! We also look at a shiraz-grenache blend from a great Barossa producer. And to round things out we suggest a riesling from the Clare Valley which is one of Australia's best and which can handle some serious cellar time.
