Less than a week after he was elected Labour leader, Dr Joseph Muscat on Thursday met Dom Mintoff, the former Labour leader and Prime Minister of Malta.Earlier this week, Dr Muscat invited Perit Mintoff to a meeting at the National Labour Headquarters, in Hamrun. Yet, on Thursday, the former Prime Minister informed Dr Muscat that due to his current health condition, he preferred to have the meeting at his home in Tarxien.In a brief comment to maltastar.com, Mark Farrugia, Labour's Media Executive, confirmed that Dr Muscat and Labour secretary general Jason Micallef met Dom Mintoff on Thursday morning. Since he was elected, Dr Muscat repeatedly insisted that he will be working to bring back to Labour all those who drifted away from the party in the last years. "Go out and tell other Labour party supporters who did not feel comfortable in the party in the last years that the door is open. I will go to these people myself to bring them back. To the people who have never been part of our Labour family, tell them... this is your home," Dr Muscat said on Friday, a few minutes after the results of the Labour leadership election were announced.The Labour leader has already invited former Labour MPs and former Labour ministers to attend his first rally at the Labour Headquarters, last Sunday. Some of those who accepted the invitation On Monday, in an interview to the national television station's current affairs programme Bondiplus, Dr Muscat said that he does not agree with those who give the impression that Labour's former leader and Prime Minister Dom Mintoff never existed. While it is true that during his time in office, some mistakes were made, as happens with any leader, at the same time under his governments, the country made great progress. Dr Muscat has already apologised for all the times Labour acted wrongly, or hurt the feelings of other persons. Yet, he made it clear that he will not put aside the great achievements which Labour made for Malta. The public should be aware of Labour's achievements in the past, so that they will be able to appreciate Labour's rich history.

"As Socialists, no legal exemption can justify or lead to a moral and political exemption from our obligations to tackle climate change... this is why I believe that as a Labour Party in an EU member state, albeit the smallest and thus exempt from legal obligations, we should still aspire and aim at achieving these targets."When he was addressing the 23rd Congress of the Socialist International, in Athens, Labour leader Joseph Muscat made it clear that socialist parties around the world should feel morally and politically obliged to tackle climate change. "Until exemptions and derogations from international agreements and regulations continue to be considered as domestic political exploits, then it means that there is a great deal that needs to be done." He explained that despite its small size, Malta should still aim to reach the globally established targets on emission cuts and environment protection -- "as Socialists, we cannot ignore this reality." Dr Muscat went a step further, stating that Malta should meet these targets to serve as an example to other states. International consensus on the need to address climate change is not enough without an emphasis on education. Children and youths have to grow up in a different culture -- a culture of protecting the environment, and of efficient use of resources. We will only be able to look forward to advancement in this sector if this culture change is achieved, the Labour leader told the 700 plus delegates participating in the congress. In Greece, Dr Muscat is holding meetings with some of the political leaders participating in the congress. On Monday he met George Papandreou and Louis Ayala, the President and secretary general of the Socialist International. Dr Muscat is accompanied by Joe Mifsud, Labour's International Secretary. After discussing climate change, other items on the agenda of the congress include the international increase in food prices, immigration, and current world conflicts. Amongst the politicians participating, there are the Prime Ministers of Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Hungary, as well as Francois Hollande, leader of the French Social Democratic Party, Massimo D'Alema and Piero Fassino from the Italian Democratic Party, as well Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of slain ex-Pakistani premier Benazir Bhutto. The delegates paid tribute to Bhutto with a minute of silence at the beginning of the congress.
The Chambers Rosewood vineyards specialises in making Aussie 'stickies'. Here I am tasting the Chambers Rosewood Non-Vintage Muscat. This dessert style wine comes in a 375 ml bottle that only cost about $23 a pop but pack with 19% alcohol. The colour is deep amber with a pinkish tint. Dry lychee, dry longanberry (Dragon Eye), raisins (dry red grapes) shouted loud from the tasting glass "Please come and taste me!" The alcohol really showed in the leg of my tasting glass -- full syrupy body. The wine revealed, again, more dry lychee juice / lychee nut, lychee red tea and dry Dragon Eye fruit with European marmalade and caramel toffee. Interestingly, if you subtract the sweetness, you also get cognac brandy in the background. This complex wine has won my heart and will further develop more complexity for sure. What it lacks is some acidity and citrus fruit vibrancy but why should I be so harsh?! The finish is good with slight hotness from the alcohol.
