This week we look at a typically big and rich McLaren Vale shiraz, but our other two wines are a little unusual. We take a look at a white blend of viognier and pinot gris which comes together nicely, and finally a pinot noir which will appeal to those red wine lovers who like their wines "bigger" in style.
When most people mention the Pyrenees, the first thought is Europe, but there is also a Pyrenees in Australia. This week we kick off with a brilliant shiraz from the Aussie version. We also look at a bright, dry Rosé from the Yarra Valley and a Clare Pinot Gris that contains more depth than usual for the variety.
Jonathan Mitchell came in and we tasted the following wines: 2005 JL Wolf Grauburgunder "Alte Reben" It's a Pinot Gris, made by winemaker of the year, Dr. Ernst Loosen! And it's from Pfalz, Germany. Lightly oaked.2005 Schmelz Gruner Veltliner "Pichl Point" It's a Smaragd, which is the highest quality level of Gruner Veltliners, made in Wachau, Austria. Hans Schmelz was Falstaff magazine's Vintner of the year" in 2005. 93 points.Notes of apple, pineapple, grapefruit, and banana, great acidity, even peppery on the finish...2005 Sattler St. Laurent from Neusiedlersee, Austria. The St. Laurent grape is in the family of Pinot Noir but a tad richer and spicier. Named after the time of year it ripens (veraison), St. Laurent's Day in Germany. California may be most well known for Cabernet Sauvignon, but host Brian Freedman doesn't want you to forget about the Pinot Grigio either. Pitting two California Pinot Grigio's against each other, Brian examines a significant contrast in production style, and how that comes through on the palate. Sampled today are the Estancia 2007 Pinot Grigio and the Tangent 2006 Pinot Gris.
