Südoststeiermark:Many small wine-growing communities scattered throughout the Süd-Oststeiermark (South-East Styria) reflect the typicity of this wine-growing area. They are situated primarily on the slopes of extinct volcanoes, which characterise the landscape. Here, 1,300 hectares of vineyards are cultivated - all located around Klöch, St. Anna am Aigen and Straden. One grape variety has a special flair: the very aromatic Traminer; and it is sold mainly in the Buschenschanks, the small taverns in which wine-growers sell their own wines, often only for a limited period during the year.Südsteiermark:The Südsteiermark (South Styria) has fragrant, fresh wines made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes - which are characteristic of the area. However, the 1,950 hectares of vineyards here offer sufficient space to grow a wide variety of grapes, including Welschriesling, Morillon, Muskateller and Traminer. Although this is one of the most picturesque wine regions, wine-growing is indeed hard work in the Südsteiermark, due to its extremely steep vineyard slopes.Weststeiermark:In the Weststeiermark (West Styria) there are only 450 hectares of vineyards. But from these, wine-growers and their families create an astounding diversity of wines: the racy Schilcher, with its pronounced, fresh acidity; also, robust, tannic red wines, as well as elegant and charming sparkling wines. Yet all this stems from just one grape: the Blauer Wildbacher. Even though the origins of this grape are unknown, it has a very bright and successful future ahead.
When you're travelling around New Zealand, the best food and wine experiences are found by following recommendations, or following your nose. http://www.newzealand.com/trav l/about-nz/features/taste-new-zealand-wine-and-food/taste-new-zealand_home.cfm
What do people associate New Zealand with? I immediately think of their mighty rugby team (and their Maouri dance). What do people associate New Zealand with when it comes to a good drink? Most people would think of their Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and perhaps even Riesling and Merlot. Little would people imagine New Zealand would brew such a beautiful pilsner style lager. The Steinlager to me is the Prince of beer if I call Pilsner Urquell Emperor of all beers and Budvar King of all beers...OK just because some commercial ads try to brain wash the public calling their ugly 'Butt' King of all beers...This straw colour beer when poured has a healthy head indicating good carbonation. The nose has a profound flowery and biscuity aroma. Dry, biscuity, grainy, astringent bitterness gradually popped out upon tasting. This soft body beer was more backward than Pilsner Urquell but the sharp bitterness gradually revealed itself in the mouth with a hint of subtle sweetness. This flowery biterness beautifully intermixes with the biscuity malt to create good depth and complexity. The finish is long with positive astringent bitterness. Wow! The All Blacks has just scored another try and had it converted with ease!!! (Rating 91-93 points) by Michael Lam of the Beverage Review.
3 great buys all scored really well by Jay Miller from Chile a country with a great rep for being a value zone. Gary Vaynerchuk attacks these 3 wines on this wonderful Friday afternoon! "FRIEND HIM UP"
Fresh and ripe with an appley nose, citrus, peaches and even a touch of the exotic guava, are all part of the experience. The wine is a blend of 50% Semillon, 25% Sauvignon Blanc & 25% Chardonnay. A real fruit bomb with a lovely rounded palate. My missus loves it!
We're back from the long weekend with a new episode! Today Gary looks at a new batch of 90 point wines. Watch today and see if these wines are worthy of a 90 point rating.
This week we look at a wine which uses a closure that might just signal the end of corks on high end wines... and the wine inside the bottle isn't half bad either! As well we look at a great Shiraz with lovely chocolate characters and a semillon/sauvignon blanc from a region known for producing great versions of the blend.
Wine labels, do you collect them? Do you want to have a special, personalized or custom label? Today Gary talks about wine labels and the wines behind them.
