Make up your mind! Is it a Syrah or Shiraz? Or both? (Hint: they're the same grape, we just call it Syrah in California, the Aussies call it Shiraz. Whatever.) "Kinda plummy-raspberry-y type thing, not twangy and not really plummy, 'cause it's got so much berry to be a plum, and it's too raisin-y to be a berry," said the Grapedonk, in his closest attempt at channeling a true wine connoisseur. But don't miss the true high point of this review: wine goggles. You'll see. Trust us. Even if it does make this red taste like a white. "You gotta play," sez the Grapedonk. We paid $6.99 for this wine.

Grape Radio - Held at Villa Creek restaurant the annual Syrah Shootout involves a head-to-head competition, with winemakers and producers participating in a blind tasting to select the best three Syrahs in the lineup. Over 50 bottles of various Syrahs are bagged, numbered and set out at 6-7 different tasting stations. The prize - bragging rights until next year's event, along with a plaid (some might say gauche) sportcoat, and a pseudo-trophy in the form of a small wooden barrel with a plaque. At this year's Farewell Gala a passing of the "cotes" was presented by Ron Rawlinson from the 2006 winner, McCrea Cellars, to the winners of 2007 competition Russell From of Herman Story Wines. We travel to the northern Rhone for the story of an ancient syrah variety grown on the ridiculously steep slopes above St. Joseph. Throw in some crazy French winemakers and some crazy vineyards and you have some very crazy wine.
Syrah is a 6 yr old Holsteiner Mare by Ariadus and out of Lamonta. She is scopey, brave, honest, and has the sweetest disposition. She has been to one show and jumped around the hunter and jumper ring with ease. Syrah is jumping up to 3'6 at home. She is ready for the show circuit.
