Here is a video about another of the wonderful old English castles . . . this one in the charming town of Tonbridge, in Southern England . . . not to be confused with nearby "Tunbridge Wells", altho' "Tonbridge" WAS originally called "Tunbridge", but later changed to Tonbridge to help minimize at least SOME of the confusion, with nearby Tunbridge Wells LOL, but, BUT . . . you still need to be careful when buying TRAIN tickets, so as not to get a ticket to the wrong place! :)I visited this castle during the off season, so I had the interior of the castle TOTALLY to myself for the hour I was wandering around inside, so it was great walking in all the rooms and stairways, trying to visualize the people, and their lifestyle, that used to live here and defend it from attacks since it was first constructed in the 11th Century. The "Gatehouse", which is the main visual topic of this video, was constructed in the 13th Century.Being a retired architect, I found it REALLY interesting to learn that the architect for this castle and for a series of other castles for the same royal client, did SUCH a good job designing "state of the art" castles for him, that the royal client had the architect KILLED after the architect completed his work, rather than run the risk of the architect then going to OTHER clients to design similarly great defensive castles for THEM!! so geez . . . talk about an UNGRATEFUL CLIENT! After the castle was built, the basement was used to store food for the winter months. The food and beverages 700 years ago would have included such things as smoked meats, garlic and herbs, barrels of wine, beer, salted fish, baskets of wheat, chestnuts, etc.Swords in those days were cleaned in sawdust and sand, arrows with metal tips stuck in a barrel of sand to avoid rusting. I felt I was being watched the entire time I was inside the castle on my own, but that was probably because of the presence of the security surveillance cameras!
