Another vintage is almost done down under, and another football season is about to begin. With our minds on the footy we look at a great everyday wine with a label that has an unintentional football theme. With vintages in mind we look at a French wine from a great year, and just to prove things aren't always changing, we look at a great value riesling too.
"Lowdown" Boz Scaggs Columbia 10367 August 1976 * #3 on Billboard Charts* William "Boz" Scaggs achieved solo stardom in 1976 with the elegant, sophisticated, urban, blue-eyed soul of his sixth album, "Silk Degrees."* A 5,000,000 seller, "Silk Degrees" first charted on March 20, 1976, and spawned three Top 40 hits: "Lowdown" (#3), "Lido Shuffle" (#11), and "It's Over (#38). When the songs achieved Top 40 status, Boz was further propelled into the limelight - a place that made him uncomfortable.* "Silk Degrees" was the #2 album in America for five weeks and remained on the Billboard Hot 200 album charts for 115 weeks.* "Lowdown" won Boz a Grammy for Best R&B Song of 1976.* The producers of the movie "Saturday Night Fever" asked to use "Lowdown" in their movie, but Scaggs' manager turned them down - and it was instead used in the movie "Looking For Mr. Goodbar." (The soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" became one of the best-selling movie soundtracks of all time.)* David Paich co-wrote "Lowdown" with Scaggs. Paich would later join Toto and write many of their hits.* Scaggs came from the Texas dance band scene, where he and guitarist and high school friend Steve Miller formed a variety of local groups. In 1965, he moved to Europe, where he recorded a now-rare solo folk album. Then, he returned to the states, where he once again joined up with Miller, who was by then in San Francisco. He remained with the "Steve Miller Band" for its first two albums and then once again set out for a solo career.* With the help of Rolling Stone magazine's Editor in Chief Jann Wenner, Scaggs obtained a contract with Atlantic Records. He recorded an album in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for the Atlantic label. (Boz uses the correct spelling of "Mussel Shoals" on his website, www.bozscaggs.com)* He moved back to California, formed the "Boz Scaggs Band," and began touring regularly with the backing of his new label, Columbia. His record sales started off slowly, but began to surge in 1974 with the release of his "Slow Dancer" album.* His next album was "Silk Degrees." When it hit the shelves in 1976, everything burst wide open. The album earned platinum status.* In 1983, Scaggs announced his retirement from the music industry, choosing the more subdued life of operating a restaurant (Slim's) in San Francisco. Persuaded by his record label to resume his music career, he re-emerged in 1988 to record his album "Other Roads" and a single - "Heart of Mine" (#35 in 1988) before opting for a return to low-profile life.* He took the name "Boz" because while he was attending school, someone who mistakenly thought his first name was Bosley kept calling him "Boz," and it stuck.* Following in the footsteps of other celebs whose names have graced vino labels, Boz's fans can look for his new wine very soon. However, unlike some celebs who simply lend their name to the marketing of wines produced by vineyards owned by others, wine with the "Scaggs" label is produced with grapes grown in Boz's California vineyard. Boz & wife Dominique have been experimenting with batches in the past few years, but he said the previous results haven't been up to his standards, thus being "poured down the sink." He is currently working on the paperwork & red tape involved with becoming a vintner. Fans can look for the "Scaggs" label in the next year or so...www.bozscaggs.com
music by Meira Warshauer http://meirawarshauer.com/performed by the Jerusalem Lyric Trio at UNC-Wilmington http://www.jerusalemlyrictrio.com/Amalia Ishak, soprano; Wendy Eisler-kashy, flute; Allan Sternfield, pianosoprano, flute, piano15 min."Yishakeyni (Kiss me)" sets the first four verses of "Song of Songs," the great love song of the Bible. It invites the listener into a realm of human and Divine love which transcends boundaries through intimate merging. In this realm, all is beauty, with longing and ecstacy the poles of expression. The soprano sings the original text in Hebrew, with a modal melody derived from the traditional cantillation for "Song of Songs." She also plays with the sounds and sensuality of the language itself, sometimes using vowels alone, as if disrobing the words of their consonants for greater intimacy. The piano and flute provide a gentle harmonic and melodic landscape for the Song.It is my hope that by entering the world of "Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs)," a world known to mystics and lovers from all traditions, we will come closer to making its reality our own.text:Yi-sha-key-ni min-shi-kot pi-huO that He would kiss me with His lips!ki to-vim do-de-cha mi-ya-yinFor Your love is sweeter than wine.al keyn a-la-mot a-hey-vu-chaTherefore do the maidens love Youmash-key-ni a-cha-re-cha na-ru-tzaTake me with You, let us hasten.he-vi-a-ni ha-me-lech cha-da-ravThe King has brought me into His chambers.na-gi-la v- nis-m'-cha bachWe will be glad and rejoice in You. naz-ki-ra do-de-cha mi-ya-yinWe will find Your love more fragrant than wine.mey-sha-rim a-hey-vu-chaRightly do they love You. Munga - We Got GanjaBorn Damian Rhoden from Islington, St. Mary, Munga joined the music scene at the tender age of 18 when he entered the Red Label Wine Superstar Competition with the original song "Who Drink Out the Red Label Wine?". A past student of St Mary High and Tarrant Comprehensive, Munga hustled on the streets doing odd jobs before setting his mind on becoming an entertainer. Since then, he has never turned back. Munga developed his versatile style as a prodigy of the 'fireman' Capleton before grabbing the attention of the nation as a solo act. With an edgy rap style combined with a conscious mind and a 'gangsta ras' image, Munga broke into the business with his hit song "No Bad Like I". Lyrically "Nuh Bad Like I" launched an attack on other upcoming deejays who proved unable to match Munga's style. Following on the success of the monster hit, "No Bad Like I", Munga performed on stages all over the island, U.S. East Coast and the Caribbean. His forceful, heartfelt performances earned him a slew of loyal fans. He says: "We start travel in 2001, opening for Capleton in the small islands, and then in 2002, I opened for him on the U.S. tour. The Prophet has been the best teacher I could possibly have. He taught me about presentation, which is your image to the people, and the delivery of your sound and vocals. I commend him for that; he has the presentation aspect locked."

His father, a traveling salesman, was from Memphis. Though he was born in Canton, Ohio, the family moved to Oklahoma, then to Plano, a Texas farm town just north of Dallas. Boz' musical influences came from the music he heard as a teen on the radio in Texas - Jimmy Reed, T-Bone Walker, Ray Charles and a combination of Country, Blues, Pop, Jazz and Rock & Roll. His music has been described as all those genres "whipped all together into a stylish soul soufflé."* The producers of the movie "Saturday Night Fever" asked to use "Lowdown" in their movie, but Scaggs' manager turned them down - and it was instead used in the movie "Looking For Mr. Goodbar." A short visual visit to the Herdade da Malhadinha Nova winery and vineyard in Alentejo. Some views of the vineyards and surrounding landscape. Some bottles with their cute labels: designed by the Soares children: a cow by Matilde, a caterpillar by Francisca. The youngest, the son, has also made a label but he was too young to draw so it is just a hand imprint. It is also a farm with lots of oak trees to give acorns for the pigs (and what superb dry-cured ham!).
