Consumers and Officials in China are worried as prices jump to an 11-year high.WONG:Inflation and food prices in China are soaring. People are complaining that they cannot afford to shop for the Chinese New Year festival. STORY:Food prices are soaring in China, hitting the highest inflation value in 11 years. As the main source of food imports, inflation in the Mainland is also causing inflation in Hong Kong. [Mrs. Kau, Hong Kong Shopper]:"Now I pay 20 dollars for pork for one meal. Before, I could buy two or three meals for that price." A price rise is normal during the Chinese New Year rush, but this year it's uncommonly steep. Residents don't want the high prices of liquor to dampen the festivities.[Jiang, Customer]:"Lots of people come round and friends arrive, you can't just give them beer. It has to be Chinese traditional wine, a famous wine, preferably a famous brand from Beijing." A survey last month showed that inflation is overtaking corruption and inequality as the country's number one social problem. Officials are worrying because historically inflation woes have fuelled social upheaval.[Joseph Cheng, Political Science Professor, City University, Hong Kong]:"Substantial inflation was one of the causes for the discontent just before the Tiananmen square incident in 1989. So inflation is a very serious issue on the agenda of the Chinese leadership." Severe winter weather across China could also fuel inflation pressures, as power shortages and blocked transport further decreased food supplies.
From the dregs of existence, the sty of the solar system, comes Swill Hole a new work by artist and director Tim Folland which single handedly degenerates the last 100 years of hygiene. Swill Hole, featuring the Paintor, a scrappy and resourceful practitioner of the lost and wayward arts, was installed and filmed in the Hampden Incubator Project Space during the month of November 2007.The packrat set for Swill Hole is a combination of Parisian artist hovel, Frankenstein-like lavatory, nomad's shanty and shaman's cave. The Paintor, armed with a make shift wine box camel pack of his own design, completed two homemade, junk yard-dog experiments durning the filming: the recipe for a perfect cup of coffee and a magical wine making apparatus, both of which fueled a roller coaster of work throughout the month.

The latest addition to the HALL Artisan Collection, this debut release was the creation of Mike Reynolds, president of HALL Wines and former winemaker, who returned to the cellar to craft a very special blend just for our HALL family. Jack's Masterpiece boasts rich aromatics that are complemented by a lush sweet palate with depth and character. The story of Jack's masterpiece begins on Father's Day of 2006, when Mike Reynolds was presented with a painted canvas by his 18-month-old son, Jack that he had made himself in the backyard. Mike proudly hung the painting in his winery office. When the wine was ready to bottle in 2007, Mike Reynolds was also bestowed the task of picking the label, which typically features a select work of art from the winery collection. However, Mike decided to go a different direction and chose an extra special work of art for his handcrafted bottle, his son's painting. Hence "Jack's Masterpiece' was born, a tribute to legacy, pride, and passion, releasing just in time for Father's day, 2008. Mike notes: "Youthful aromas of blackberry and cassis are complemented by notes of white chocolate, coffee, and toasted vanilla derived from aging in French oak. The lively palate is defined by a firm, dense tannin structure which delivers both vibrant fruit and creamy richness while maintaining a delightfully balanced and supple texture. This wine, still in its infancy, is ready to enjoy now and can be expected to mature and develop beautifully for the next 10 - 15 years."

Just a quick slide show from my recent trip to Jerry's winery in Northern California. Right now, they're hard at work building the building that will store the grape-crushing tools. The wine was incredible! It was a great trip for me and I'm excited to go back next month to capture the grape crushing for the next batch of Iuliano wine! I'll be posting more soon...
